Legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar’s son Prem Sagar has opened up about why they selected Dharmendra for the 1968 film Aankhen. Prem recalled how Dharmendra was just one film old when they cast him for the film. However, Prem revealed an interesting detail and shared that it was the size of Dharmendra’s hands that made them zero in on the actor.
In an interview with Lehren, Prem said, “We selected Dharmendra for Aankhen because his hand was so big. At that time, when we selected him, Dharmendra was a nobody. He had just done Shola Aur Shabnam. But because he could hold the gun, he was selected. Can you imagine he was selected because of his hand? But that is filmmaking.”

Dharmendra and Mala Sinha starrer Ankhen was directed by Ramanand Sagar and was released in 1968. Dharmendra was recently seen in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Despite appearing in a small role, Dharmendra made heads turn with his acting and onscreen chemistry with Shabana Azmi. However, during the promotions of the film, Dharmendra had opened up about never receiving his ‘due’ in the industry.
He told Times Now, “Our family is not into marketing itself. We’ve always believed in letting our work speak for us. Sunny is in two of the biggest blockbusters of all time. You will never hear him talking about his achievements. My younger son Bobby (Deol) is also doing well for himself. But my family has never been given our due. We don’t mind. The love of our fans is enough fuel to keep us going. We don’t need the industry to acknowledge us.”
