A clash broke out in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district late Thursday evening as several Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) workers allegedly assaulted BJP workers with lathis and chased them away after a local saffron party leader invited senior RLD leader Dr Rajkumar Sangwan for tea at his house. The RLD is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Sangwan is the alliance candidate for Baghpat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In a similar incident a few days earlier, RLD leaders had refused to raise “Modi-Yogi Zindabad” slogans during a joint meeting of NDA partners in Baghpat, leading to heated arguments between both sides.

On Thursday, Sangwan was scheduled to meet locals at Tilwara village and workers of both parties were present.

When Sangwan reached the village, a BJP leader invited him to his house for tea. The RLD leaders objected to this and the situation escalated into a clash. The BJP leaders had to call the police from the Chhaprauli police station to save themselves.

“The RLD leadership should take immediate action as such a situation has cropped up within a few days in Baghpat district. This is not a good sign to ensure victory for the alliance candidate. I will take up the issue with higher-ups in Lucknow,” said Vedpal Upadhyay, the Baghpat district unit chief of the BJP.

Festive offer

“We were informed that political party workers are involved in violent clashes. A police team was rushed to Tilwara village and both groups were pacified after police intervention. No FIR has so far been lodged in this connection,” said Saviratna Gautam, the deputy superintendent of police, Baraut, Baghpat.

The Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases. Baghpat will go to polls in the second phase on April 26.
