In a special drive, the Mumbai traffic department has taken action against 52,189 autorickshaw drivers for refusing to ply nearby, driving without uniform, carrying excess passengers and not carrying necessary documents.

Officials said that the drive started on April 8, following several complaints. According to the figures provided by the traffic authorities, between April 8 and 22, action was taken against 32,658 drivers for refusing the nearest fare at the railway stations, malls, bus stations and other places.

An officer said, “About 5,268 were charged for not wearing uniform, 8,650 for transporting excess passengers and action against 5,613 drivers for other irregularities.”  The traffic authorities further added that the process of suspending the licences of 32,658 drivers for refusing fares has been initiated.
