A former software engineer at Google took to LinkedIn to describe the night when he and his team got laid off. In a heartbreaking post, the techie shared the moment he received the email about losing his job.

The techie began with how his regular night with his girlfriend at his home turned into a sad one after he went downstairs after dinner only to learn about the layoffs at Google. “That was 21:00. I got a weird email saying ‘You Cloudtop StopInstance operation has begun’ and I suddenly recalled I just had the cloudtop maintenance a few days back, it couldn’t be a scheduled task, there is definitely something bad happening. I even ‘Momaed’ (Google’s internal search engine) ‘what stopinstance means’ and I did get the results from the website, so I chose not to believe I was leaving the company,” he wrote.

“Thus I had the longest five minutes in my life, witnessing how I lost corp access one website by another, with a forced laptop reboot, then finally, an email saying ‘Notice regarding your employment’. Until then I started to realise, my watch at Google is over,” he added.

The techie messaged his teammates and learned that a few of them had been laid off too. While drafting a farewell e-mail, he received an email from his manager who informed him that he had been asked to leave too. “As he wrote, ‘my hands are shaking as I write this email’, my hands were shaking too while reading. He’s been at Google for almost 13 years, he founded our team from the first line of code, built everything from scratch, now he had to say goodbye to his baby, with limited corp access except Gmail,” the techie wrote on LinkedIn.
