‘Murder of democracy’: Opposition leaders slam Govt over suspension of MPs from Parliament | Political Pulse News

Opposition leaders criticised the suspension of 78 Members of Parliament on Monday during the ongoing Winter Session, with the Congress calling the move a murder of democracy.

“Not only in the Lok Sabha, today was a bloodbath in the Rajya Sabha with 45 INDIA party MPs getting suspended for demanding a statement by the Home Minister on the December 13th security breach, and for demanding that the Leader of the Opposition be allowed to speak. Incidentally, I too figure in this Roll of Honour — for the first time in my parliamentary career of 19 years. This is Murder of Democracy in India(MODI) at work!, ” said Congress leader. Jairam Ramesh.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, said, “With an Opposition-less Parliament, the Modi Govt can now bulldoze important pending legislations, crush any dissent, without any debate. All Democratic norms are being thrown into the dustbin by an autocratic Modi Govt by suspending 47 MPs.”

“PM can give an interview to a newspaper; the Home Minister can give interviews to TV channels. But, they have zero accountability left to the Parliament which represents the People of India,” he added further.

Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who was also suspended for creating uproar in the house, said they have been demanding the House revoke the previous suspensions and the home minister make a statement in the House on the Parliament security breach of December 13.

Chowdhury said the Home Minister should let the people know about the security measures to be taken in Parliament. “It is important to take the opposition along while running the House… but today’s government has reached the extreme level of dictatorship. They are wielding the stick of ‘bahubalis’ (musclemen). They have suspended everybody,” Chowdhury said after the latest suspensions.

Three Congress MPs – K Jayakumar, Vijay Vasanth and Abdul Khaleque – were suspended for climbing onto the Speaker’s podium and shouting slogans. Their matter has been referred to the Privileges Committee and the duration of their suspension will be decided later.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, talking about the suspension of the members, said, “This is the mockery of the democracy.” “This is a very bad case…She was not allowed to defend herself. Opposition leaders are suspended when they put forth their views, but it’s all good for BJP members, speaking about Mahua Moitra’s expulsion from the Parliament,” Mamata said.

In a voice note, 45 MPs from the Rajya Sabha have been suspended for the rest of the Winter Session in Parliament. Meanwhile, a total of thirty-three opposition members, including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from the Congress, T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran from the DMK, and Saugata Roy from the TMC, were suspended from the Lok Sabha on Monday for disrupting the proceedings of the house.

“Aisi tanasahi nahi chalegi, na desh ko kabul hai (Such dictatorship would not work, the country would not accept it),” said Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on the suspension of the MPs. “Neither the Prime Minister nor the Home Minister speaks on it. If we demand your statement, you suspend us from the House – this is not acceptable to anyone,” Priyanka added further speaking news agency ANI.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said on the suspension of MPs amid a stalemate over the Parliament security breach incident, “They are bulldozing the opposition and crushing the moral rights of people in the House. It makes evident that they don’t have the intention to run the House.”

The ruling BJP on Monday accused the Congress and other opposition parties of “insulting” the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairperson and “embarrassing” the country with their conduct.

Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal said that opposition members brought placards and willfully disrupted parliamentary proceedings despite the decision taken earlier that placards would not be allowed in the Houses.
