A 20-year-old woman was brutally murdered by her boyfriend in the middle of a busy street in Palghar, Maharashtra on Tuesday morning.

In a disturbing incident, a 20-year-old woman was clobbered to death with an iron wrench by her boyfriend in full public view in Palghar district of Maharashtra on Tuesday. The brutal murder was caught on CCTV camera and showed the victim, Aarti Yadav, being bludgeoned to death by her boyfriend Rohit Yadav.

In the CCTV clip, Rohit is seen striking Aarti with an industrial spanner multiple times on a busy street in Chinchpada locality of Vasai East even as passerbys look on in utter shock but none came forward to rescue the victim.

According to the police, Aarti was on her way to work with her boyfriend on Tuesday morning when the couple got into a verbal spat midway, leading to the fatal assault. The incident took place at around 8:30 AM, they said.

The video showed Aarti collapsing on to the ground due to the assault but the accused relentlessly continued to beat her to death with a spanner.

The accused, Rohit, struck as many as 15 blows to Aarti with an industrial spanner, leaving her in a pool of blood in the middle of the road while onlookers watched and walked away but no one came to her rescue.

“The accused attacked the woman with an industrial spanner, and there were 18 wounds on her body,” a senior police official said.

After committing the horrifying act, Rohit did not flee the scene but instead sat on the steps near his girlfriend’s body and was later detained by the police who arrived at the spot and sent the victim’s body for post-mortem.

Giving details, police said the brutal murder stemmed from a romantic relationship between the accused and the victim turned sour. Both Aarti and Rohit reside in the same neighbourhood in Nalla Sopara and had been in a relationship for the last six years.

“The couple worked together at an industrial estate and had been together for the last six years, but recently their relationship had turned sour as Rohit suspected Aarti of having an affair with another man,” said senior inspector Jairaj Ranawre of Valiv police.

Police said some passersby merely stood and witnessed the attack, and some even shot videos but none came to the young woman’s rescue, adding that a woman and a man who allegedly filmed the fatal attack and posted the videos on social media, have also been detained.

Further investigation in the case is underway, they said.
