A complaint was filed against TMC MP Rachana Banerjee for the revealing the name of the trainee doctor who was raped and killed at a hospital in Kolkata.

A police complaint was filed against Trinamool Congress MP Rachana Banerjee for revealing the identity of the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally raped and killed at the RK Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.

A video condemning the doctor’s rape and murder was recently posted by Rachana Banerjee on her social media handle, in which she revealed the victim’s name. Following Banerjee’s social media post, a complaint was filed against her by Shayan Sachin Basu, an advocate of the Kolkata High Court, demanding strict legal action against the actor-politician.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the TMC leader apologised for revealing the victim’s name, saying she had done as she was speaking “emotionally from the heart”, according to India Today.

“It was definitely a very big mistake on my part. I shouldn’t have done that. I should have referred to her as ‘Tilottama,’ as everyone else is doing. I was very sad and emotional at that moment while making the video. All the words I was saying were from my heart, and it was not scripted. Naturally, with the emotion, that name came to my mind,” India Today quoted Banerjee as saying.

The TMC MP also said she has deleted the video from her social media.

Notably, BJP leader and former MP Locket Chatterjee, and two renowned doctor —  Dr Kunal Sarkar and Dr Subarna Goswami — have also been summoned by the Kolkata Police for revealing the victim’s name, India Today reported.

Revealing the identity of a rape victim is a punishable offence under section 72 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which can invite either a jail term up to two years or a fine or both.
