The Karnataka government will construct a Sports City in an area of 100 acres at Mavallipura, near Yelahanka, in Bengaluru, Sports and Youth Empowerment and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Minister B Nagendra told the Assembly on Wednesday.

Nagendra’s statement, which came in reply to a query from Yelahanka MLA SR Vishwanath, led to moments of humour in the House as the BJP MLA said he would parade the minister in a silver chariot if the Sports City came up. “Let’s play Kabaddi on the day of the inauguration,” Nagendra said in response, leaving the house in peals of laughter.

While the initial proposal was to build the Sports City on 60 acres at Mavallipura, the sports and youth empowerment department has requested the revenue department for 40 more acres of land. “Work will start after the parcel of land is obtained and the state cabinet clears the proposal,” Nagendra said.

According to the minister’s written reply, land for the facility is yet to be handed over by the revenue department. It will be built either by the government or with help from private parties and have all amenities for sporting activities under one roof, he said.

To another question, Nagendra said the government was also focusing on constructing stadiums in district and taluk centres.
