Filmmaker David Dhawan’s Mujhse Shaadi Karogi released on this day (July 30) 20 years ago and became a runaway success at the box office and is still remembered fondly. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film was a comedy revolving around three characters played by Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra with late actors Amrish Puri and Kader Khan also shining in pivotal roles.

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi saw Salman play Sameer, who suffers from anger issues. The character and the actor’s performance were lauded by the audience. So, it would come as a surprise to many to know that Salman had signed the film without hearing the narration or knowing about his character.

This was revealed to Bollywood Hungama by the film’s dialogue writer Rumy Jafry in an exclusive conversation. “I had narrated the idea to Akshay earlier,” he said. “But for Salman, I narrated the film and his character for the first time just before the mahurat in the make-up room. There is such a deep friendship between Sajid and Salman. Me and David also have close relations with him. Yeh Salman ka badappan hai that he signs films based on relations without hearing the narration and just on the basis of trust.”

Jafry added that, like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Salman has acted in a lot of two-hero projects but has never felt insecure because of the presence of the other star actor. “I have never seen insecurity in Salman till date. There are times when actors become insecure (in two-hero films). But Salman is never insecure, whether it’s two or three hero film. I have known him and worked with him so many times in these 30 years,” he said.

Jafry revealed that he always ensures that he is present on the sets of films he has written. “I have been on the sets for 99% of my films,” he said. “They aren’t shot without me. I make the actors go through the rehearsals.”

When asked about the process of shooting Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Jafry said, “It was enjoyable. Picture aise haste-khelte ban gayi. This used to be in all our films. Today, there has been such a major change. There is a different level of trust between Sajid, Salman, David, Akshay and me. Dosti, bharosa aur rishta tha humare beech. And all our work used to become a success,” he said.

Interestingly, Akshay recently met Jafry and suggested him to work on something on the lines of MSK. “The other day I met Akshay Kumar at a shoot and he suggested, ‘Yaar Rumy, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi phir se likh’. He said it can either be a sequel or a similar subject. He said his fans keep saying the same to him about this film,” said Jafry.
