Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parinda remains one of the most iconic crime dramas. It saw Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor play brothers while Nana Patekar played the role of gang leader Anna. Recently, during the launch of his memoir, legendary artiste Amol Palekar revealed that Nana did something on the sets of Parinda, which almost cost him a role in his directorial Thoda Sa Roomani Ho Jaayen (1990).

Speaking at the interaction after the book launch, Palekar said, “Can you believe that even a volatile person like Nana throughout Thoda Sa Roomani Ho Jaayen never ever raised his voice? And this was after Parinda where he had thrashed Vidhu Vinod Chopra there on the sets of Parinda, which was known all over the press.”

Palekar revealed that Nana came to him to ask for the role of Natwarlal in Thoda Sa Roomani Ho Jaayen. He said, “When he came to me, he said, ‘You are doing a film, I heard. Why are you not taking me?’ I said, ‘You are not the right person for that (role). That person is not an angry man. Not someone who would bash up people. He is a very soft, poetic kind of a person. You don’t fit into that.’”

But Nana didn’t give up. Palekar added, “Nana said, ‘But don’t you think I can do it?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t think you can do it.’ He said, ‘Okay, give me a chance. I will come and rehearse and after eight days of rehearsals, if you say, no Nana you can’t do it, I will walk away and not argue with you.’ That’s how he was cast ultimately.”

Sharing his pleasantly surprising experience with Nana, Palekar added, “In the rehearsals, Nana which started emerging, was something which was so different then Nana. It was such a beautiful experience, which evolved. I also cherish that experience of molding a person, which is totally against his grade. That was a big challenge for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed that.”

Interestingly, earlier this year Vidhu Vinod Chopra also confessed to tearing off Nana Patekar’s shirt during an argument on the sets of Parinda. He also added that they later patched up on the sets itself.

Coming back to Palekar’s memoir, it is titled ‘Aivaj’ in Marathi and ‘Viewfinder’ in English.
