Over the weekend, chaos erupted at the iconic Bloomingdale’s flagship store on Third Avenue in Manhattan as a mob of over a dozen individuals attempted to steal approximately $5,300 worth of designer sunglasses. The daring heist unfolded on Saturday evening when a group of shoplifters, described by the New York Police Department as migrants, targeted the luxury eyewear section of Bloomingdale’s. Their method involved attempting to conceal the stolen items on their person as they made their exit.

As the perpetrators tried to leave, the store’s security team intervened, leading to a scuffle. In the ensuing chaos, one of the suspects allegedly shoved a security guard, and another individual was struck in the head with a closed fist.

Arrest Made Amidst Struggle

The NYPD was quick to respond, and amidst the struggle, they managed to apprehend 22-year-old Stiven Matos at the scene. Matos now faces multiple charges, including robbery, criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.

While Matos is in custody, at least 14 other individuals involved in the brazen theft managed to escape, leaving law enforcement authorities in pursuit. The NYPD declined to comment on the immigration status of the suspects, as reported by the New York Post.

Details of the Loot

The stolen merchandise, valued at around $5,300, included high-end brands such as Versace, Prada, and Christian Dior. Authorities successfully recovered 10 pairs of Versace sunglasses, two pairs of Prada glasses, and one pair of Christian Dior specs.

A spokesperson for Bloomingdale’s refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigation and crime scene, citing the inability to provide details during an active inquiry.
