Recently, Aamir Khan sat down with Rhea Chakraborty for a conversation on her podcast, Chapter 2. During the conversation, he revealed many important details about his kids, his decision to quit film work and his future plans. The actor made a startling revelation that during COVID-19 and lockdown, he got a lot of time to sit and introspect on his life. So, it made him realise how he was engrossed in his work for the past 30 years, which made him miss a lot of time with his family and kids. Aamir added that the thought made him angry towards himself. He was was quoted as saying:
“And the people closest to me, I haven’t given them any time in those 30 years… 30 years! Not three weeks, not three months, or three years… 30 years! My Ammi is aging now. I don’t know how much time. I have left with her. As such you can’t trust life anyway. There is no guarantee when it comes to our lives. But a realisation dawned upon me, that I’m spending very less time with Ammi.”
The Dangal actor said he was so unhappy and guilt-ridden over neglecting his family due to work that he decided to completely leave films. He tried to sell his production company but didn’t get buyers, even his son, Junaid, didn’t want it. The incident occurred when Aamir was making his last release, Laal Singh Chaddha, and decided it would be his release. In his words:
“That realisation was a turning point in my life. At that time, I made a decision. I mean, I told myself that the thing that kept me away from my family… -I’ll leave that. -I am going to leave that. So, I decided that I wouldn’t work in films. I would never do a film in my entire life. I won’t work in films, I will not act, I will not produce. I will not direct. Absolutely nothing. I want to move away from films.”
Aamir added that when he discussed the decision with his kids and now ex-wife, Kiran Rao, they convinced him otherwise. He said his daughter, Ira, asked him to maintain a better work-life balance. So, he decided to continue work but had to balance it with his personal life. As a result, he feels less guilty now.
