After back-to-back disasters, can Kangana’s Emergency be her ultimate comeback and her box office saviour? : Bollywood News

Kangana Ranaut, one of Bollywood’s most versatile actors, has seen her career oscillate between extraordinary highs and disappointing lows. As her upcoming film Emergency, set to release on January 17, 2025, garners attention, the big question remains: can it revive her struggling box office streak?

After back-to-back disasters, can Kangana’s Emergency be her ultimate comeback and her box office saviour?

Kangana’s career boasts hits like Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), which was a massive success [Super Hit], earning ₹150.8 crore domestically, and the critically acclaimed Queen (2014), which collected ₹61 crore. However, her recent releases have failed to replicate this success, marking a downward trajectory in her box office performance.

In 2023, Tejas, where Kangana played an Indian Air Force pilot, managed a mere ₹4.14 crore, making it a disaster. Similarly, Dhaakad (2022), an action thriller, earned an abysmal ₹3 crores. Prior to that, her ambitious biographical drama Thalaivii (2021), where she portrayed Tamil Nadu’s former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, garnered only ₹1.46 crore despite her praised performance. Other recent films like Panga (2020), which collected ₹28.92 crore, and Judgementall Hai Kya (2019), with ₹33.11 crore, were also commercial disappointments.

Even earlier, in 2019, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi fared better, earning ₹92.19 crore and being labeled an average success. However, Kangana’s previous projects like Simran (₹17.26 crore in 2017), Rangoon (₹20.68 crore in 2017), and Katti Batti (₹24.41 crore in 2015) were all flops. This string of underwhelming performances starkly contrasts with her career peaks.

Emergency is unlike Kangana’s other recent ventures. The film dives into one of India’s most controversial periods, the Emergency declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977. Kangana not only stars as Indira Gandhi but also directs the film, showcasing her multifaceted talent.

The film’s subject matter is rooted in a politically charged era that continues to stir debate, making it highly relevant to politically aware audiences and history enthusiasts. With its historical and political significance, Emergency has the potential to attract viewers interested in India’s tumultuous past.

Kangana’s reputation for powerful performances also adds to the film’s appeal. Known for her dedication to roles, she has delivered memorable portrayals in films like Queen and Manikarnika. If Emergency lives up to its promise, it could remind audiences of her exceptional talent and range as an actor.

Additionally, audience curiosity surrounding the portrayal of a towering political figure like Indira Gandhi provides another advantage. Kangana’s bold and polarizing persona further adds intrigue, making viewers eager to see how she embodies such a significant historical character.

Finally, the marketing and release window work in the film’s favor. Scheduled for a January release, Emergency avoids direct competition with major festive or summer blockbusters. With strategic marketing in the coming days, the film could generate significant buzz and maximize its reach in theaters.

Despite its potential, Emergency faces considerable hurdles. Kangana’s recent films have struggled due to weak scripts and a lack of connection with mainstream audiences. Additionally, her polarizing image could deter certain sections of viewers. For the film to succeed, it will need glowing reviews and strong word-of-mouth support.

Moreover, the current Bollywood landscape favors high-budget spectacles and franchise films. A politically intense drama like Emergency will have to rely heavily on content and execution to stand out.

For Kangana Ranaut, Emergency is more than just another project; it’s a statement. After a series of box office misfires, the film is an opportunity to prove her enduring relevance in the industry. If successful, Emergency could mark the beginning of a new chapter in her career, reminding both critics and audiences of her talent and resilience.

Whether Emergency can revive her box office streak will depend on its ability to connect with audiences and deliver a compelling cinematic experience. For now, all eyes are on January 17, as Kangana attempts to turn the tide and reclaim her position as one of Bollywood’s leading stars.
