Since allying with the ruling BJP in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar appears to have lost interest in communicating with his cousin and MP Supriya Sule or keeping his family ties intact. The Baramati MP has revealed that the Deputy Chief Minister has refused to respond to her calls making it difficult for her to resolve issues affecting her constituency.

“Ajit dada does not take my calls and refuses to return them,” Sule told The Indian Express on Sunday, adding, “This has been going on since Ajit dada teamed up with the BJP.”

Water shortage in all talukas in Baramati was the chief topic of discussion at a meeting of the canal committee in Pune on Saturday. “However, Ajit dada showed no interest in discussing the issues. Other than saying ‘okay’, he refused to address the matter,” Sule pointed out.

NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar – the grandnephew of Sharad Pawar – was also present at the meeting. He reportedly thanked Ajit Pawar later for taking a decision to ensure water in Karjat, which is part of his constituency.

Supriya Sule said that if she has any work related to her constituency, she has to approach Chief Minister Eknath Shinde or Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. “Both take my calls and if they are busy, they make it a point to return the calls… But Ajit dada does not show the same courtesy,” she said. “There are issues in my constituency, especially related to water. I want to place them before him and get his help, but he remains in silent mode,” Sule said.

Festive offer

Asked why the deputy chief minister may not be cooperating with her, Sule said, “Ask Ajit dada. He knows the real reason.”

Meanwhile, NCP leaders close to Ajit Pawar indicated that he was upset with his cousin after she aggressively attacked him for joining hands with the BJP. “Sule has alleged that the party founded by her father was stolen by Ajit Pawar. Last week in Baramati, Ajit angrily refuted her allegations and clarified that first the Election Commission of India and then the state Assembly Speaker declared that his faction was the ‘real’ NCP,” said a close associate of Ajit Pawar.

“He has made it clear that he has taken charge of the party legally and has not stolen or run away with it. Ajit Pawar is hurt by the allegations and that is why he is avoiding Sule,” the associate added.

When approached for his reaction, NCP chief spokesperson Umesh Patil said, “Supriya Sule has been making all sorts of false allegations against Ajit Pawar. She said Ajit fled with the party and stole it. Perhaps the deputy chief minister is upset because of her allegations. Sule should remember that Ajit Pawar slogged for the party for 35 years and has been a key figure in the growth of NCP since its formation.”

“I don’t know in what capacity Sule has been calling Ajit Pawar who has been resolving Baramati’s issues since 1991 when he first became an MP and was then subsequently elected as an MLA,” Patil said.
