Staring directly at the sun is a dangerous act that can cause lasting damage to your eyes, even during the fleeting moments of a partial eclipse. If you happen to be on the total eclipse path, you will have a brief period where the sun is wholly hidden, allowing you to safely remove the special solar filters you were wearing to watch the outer layer of the sun, known as the corona. But keep in mind that apart from these short points of total obscurity, you’ll need the right eyewear to protect yourself.

You must take care not to look at the sun using naked eyes, binoculars, a telescope, or a camera unless they’re equipped with the appropriate solar filters. These filters, specially designed for watching the sun, must comply with international safety standards. It’s not safe to use normal sunglasses or any improvised filters.
