EXCLUSIVE: Akshay Oberoi on the Breaking News culture, “We all should sit down and reflect till what extent should we continue pushing this” : Bollywood News

It has been a positive 2024 for Akshay Oberoi. The year started off with his first multi-starrer commercial project Fighter, which became a success. He is now seen in the recently-released second season of The Broken News, where he plays a pivotal character of Ronnie Sabharwal. The trailer of the second season of the show, however, doesn’t show him much. He touched upon this during an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama.

“It’s a red herring,” said Akshay. “You can’t say too much about this character. It’s a serious character. Maybe the makers decided that it would be better if we don’t show this character much (in the trailer). Whatever plot twist is that, it should be unexpected. I think that’s the way they chose to go about it. And I think that’s the right away to go about it. We also approach the performance that way. We have painted a picture of who he is but then dheere dheere uske patte khulte hain. And then you are like – oh okay, loved it.”

Akshay listed down three reasons for agreeing to act in the second season of show. “Vinay (Waikul) and I had worked together on The Test Case. There is this excitement of collaborating with a director you have worked with. There is already that comfort. You respect and understand each other. I love collaborating with people who I have already worked with once. There is so much bhaag-daud in filmmaking that it takes you a while to get to know each other. So it’s fun when all of that is out of the way and you get to work immediately,” he said.

Secondly, Akshay was pleased with the character (about which he is tight-lipped) offered. “Whatever character he told me of Ronnie Sabharwal, I thought this would be fun; going by the graph of the character. And thirdly, it was already a hit show. It had done well. To join a hit show is exciting because in India or, more precisely, in Hindi, not many projects do well. So when something works, it’s nice to be a part of that team,” said the actor.

Apart from being able to collaborate with a talented artiste, there is another reason why Akshay enjoyed working with Shriya Pilgaonkar. “I like that she likes to rehearse and I love that too,” he said. “Normally what happens is that I learn my lines and the other person learns theirs. And then the first time you are acting together is in front of the camera. Then the director kind of polishes it.”

He continued added, “But an actor has a lot of time on the sets. So I love when a co-actor rehearses. Because some people don’t like to rehearse. Everyone has a process. I am not saying one is right and the other is wrong. But the process is to keep working on the scene over and over because you discover so much. So by the time the camera runs, you have absorbed so much that you can forget the rehearsal and go with the take. When Shriya realized that I also love to rehearse, we kept running lines and discovering the scene. So by the time we shot the scene, there is already a foundation laid.”

Apart from Shriya, The Broken News stars Sonali Bendre and Jaideep Ahlawat in key roles. The show is about the battle between two news channels in terms of truth vs viewership. The craze for television ratings is known far and wide in India since years. When we asked Akshay on his take on the whole scenario, he gave a deep answer.

“At first, I used to get disturbed by all these things tied together with the basic thing that we are staying in a capitalistic society,” he said. “Everybody has an agenda or mandate. Everyone has to run their channel. Every studio needs to do the investment in terms of the bottom-line. So now people care less about humanity and more about money. And I think that’s also affecting our films. Films are about human emotions. But the casting is happening because of certain bottom-line. And the way the films are marketed to achieve that bottom-line.”

He added, “Now you can’t fight the system. The system is created this way. And we all have agreed to live with capitalism. But somewhere I feel like it’s going too far and we as a society should be responsible about how far should this go? I understand that economic growth is important. But we should all kind of sit down and reflect till what extent should we continue pushing this. Because if we have reached here today, just imagine what will happen after 10 years. It’s scary, very scary.”
