Explore this year’s Met Gala theme Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion

We are only a week away from the prestigious Met Gala which will take place on Monday, May 6, in New York City at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year the fundraiser will celebrate the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion and the official dress code is The Garden of Time.

The dress code is Inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story of the same title which can be interpreted in multiple ways and is about a couple who live in a beautiful villa filled with beautiful paintings, rare books and vines and flower vases. Gathering from the aesthetics of the story, it can be understood that we will see a variety of floral prints and insect embroidery on the red carpet.

On the other hand, the theme Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion refers to the museum’s treasured collection of garments that are fragile. Generally, the collections are displayed on mannequins but this year pieces from the collection will be kept in glass coffins. The curators also mentioned that 250 garments and accessories spanning four centuries will be on view and the garments will be displayed in a series of galleries inspired by themes of nature.
