To promote a relaxed and creative environment for school children, Dr Senu Duggal, Deputy Commissioner, Fazilka, Punjab, launched the ‘Bag Free Day’ programme at government primary schools across the district on Wednesday.

The programme was launched at the Government Primary School, Ekta Colony, Abohar.

Under the innovative programme, the last Saturday of each month will be observed as ‘Bag Free Day’ for all students of government primary schools in the district. On this day, students will be engaged in various creative activities too.

It needs to be mentioned that till now, the last Saturday of every month used to be a regular school day from 8 am to 2 pm in summers and from 9 am to 3 pm in winters.

“There used to be studies as per timetable till recess and from noon till 2 pm, we used to organise Bal Sabha in which co-curricular activities would be organised. However, now the deputy commissioner has said co-curricular activities will be carried out the whole day. It is a unique initiative,” said Shiv Pal, district education officer (DEO), primary wing, Fazilka district.

Festive offer

Duggal said, “The programme aims to provide a stress-free learning experience, enhance creativity and skills and ensure holistic development of children. The activities, including group games, creative sessions, storytelling, role-play, yoga, science experiments and class discussions will be performed that day (Bag Free Day).”

The DEO added, “No student will be writing anything on Bag Free Day. In short, on the last Saturday of every month, nothing related to the class syllabus will be done. We hope the children will love this change.”

Duggal also said, “We are committed to work for a holistic education approach for children that is beyond textbooks. The ‘Bag Free Day’ programme is a step towards creating a more engaging and interactive environment for our students.” The programme will be a boon for the mental and physical health of children, she added.

Fazilka has 468 primary schools which teach around 72,000 students.
