Following complaints of violation of the election code of conduct, FIRs were registered against state BJP chief Chandrshekhar Bawankule and Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Friday.

Bawankule has been booked in Thane for BJP’s advertisement where it claimed victory for the Opposition would lead to celebrations in the neighbouring country. Wadettiwar has been booked for his controversial remark on the killing of former ACB chief Hemant Karkare. Last week Wadettiwar alleged Karkare was not shot by 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab but by a police officer affiliated to RSS.

The BJP took objection to Wadettiwar’s statement and registered a complaint with the state election commission and police.

State Chief Electoral Officer S Chokalingam on Friday said, “So far 54 complaints have been received against various political parties and decisions were taken in 24 after scrutiny.” A large number of complaints were received from Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in connection with cash disbursement.

To strictly monitor the poll process and take action on violation of the code of conduct there are 1,600 flying squads and 2,000 static surveillance teams deployed across Maharashtra. Cash, drugs, liquor, freebies etc valued at Rs 614.14 crore have been seized till May 9.

Festive offer

The state electoral office, which reviewed the preparations for polls in Mumbai on May 20, has appealed for higher voting percentage to the people.

According to an electoral officer, “The Election Commission of India’s efforts to ensure higher voter turnout through various awareness campaigns should be reciprocated with the backing of society and parties.” In the third phase the voter turnout at 63.55 per cent was 0.12 per cent higher compared to 63.43 per cent in 2019. In the second phase it was 62.71 per cent, which was 0.21 per cent more compared to 62.50 per cent five years ago. While the first phase polling in the state at 63.71 per cent was 0.04 per cent less than 2019.
