Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Srinagar on Thursday evening for a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, marking his first official trip to the region since assuming office for the third term.
The theme for 2024, “Yoga for Self and Societ,” focuses on the dual benefits of yoga, enhancing personal health and fostering societal well-being. It highlights the relation between individual and communal wellness, advocating yoga as a means for personal development and societal upliftment.
Security arrangements are stringent with multi-layered measures in place across the Srinagar city. Roads leading to the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), the venue for the Yoga Day event, have been sealed off. Extensive sanitisation and security checks have been conducted, covering officials, security personnel, sportspersons, and attendees.
To ensure safety, the Srinagar Police have declared the city a “Temporary Red Zone” for drone operations Under Drone Rules, 2021. Unauthorised drone activity within this zone will face penalities as per the law.
Leading up to the main event, multiple yoga sessions have been organised over the past three days across various locations in Srinagar and the Valley. Events included a session near the iconic clock tower at Lal Chowk and a mega yoga camp at Polo Ground. Similar activities have been held at SKICC and other venues to commemorate the 10th International Yoga Day.
The International Yoga Day originated on September 27m 2014, when PM Modi introduced the concept during his address at the United Nations General Assembly. He highlighted the ancient roots of yoga and its capacity to foster worldwide health and harmony. Later, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations designated June 21 as the International Yoga Day, endorsed by 177 member states.
