Maharashtra Assembly clears Lokayukta bill | Mumbai News

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday passed the Lokayukta Bill which brings the chief minister and council of ministers in the ambit of Lokayukta . The Bill was tabled by Industries Minister Uday Samant.

The bill was passed by the Maharashtra Legislative Council last week. The bill, which was passed by the state assembly in December 2022, was referred to the joint select committee after the objections and suggestions made by the legislators but it was later tabled after the joint committee’s recommendations.

The Lokayukta will have to seek the approval of the assembly before initiating any inquiry against the chief minister and bringing a motion before the session of the house. Such a motion shall be passed by not less than two-thirds of the total members of the Vidhan Sabha.

After the approval of both the houses the bill will now be sent for the President’s approval for the implementation.
