The detention of armed miscreants and the seizure of weapons from them in Manipur’s Bishnupur led to a confrontation between Meira Paibis (Meitei women vigilantes) and security forces early Tuesday morning.
The security personnel had to open fire to disperse the crowd but the men detained by the security forces were “snatched” by the agitators.

According to a statement by the Manipur police, a column of the Army’s Mahar Regiment intercepted and detained 11 “armed miscreants” dressed in police fatigues and recovered several guns, grenades and ammunitions from them.
The agitating women demanded the release of the detained men and the return of the seized arms, saying that they oppose the seizure of arms till the end of the conflict. According to a security source, the Army column was blocked by the women in Kumbi in Bishnupur, with some women lying on the road and with a vehicle placed on the road.
The crowd later dispersed after additional reinforcements – including the RAF – were brought in and a team led by Bishnupur SP Ravikumar and Thanga MLA T Robindro arrived at the spot.
