Over 4.21 lakh traffic violations caught on camera in 6 months in Chandigarh | Chandigarh News

Over 4.21 lakh traffic violations have been caught on camera in Chandigarh in the first six months of 2024, according to data compiled by Chandigarh Smart City Limited, which manages the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC).

The category that had the highest traffic violations was red-light jumping. As many as 2,69,487 people—over 1,500 people a day—jumped traffic signals.

Speeding was the next most frequent violation. Over 80,897 challans were generated for speeding in the city. This meant over 400 people were caught speeding on the city roads daily.

As many as 60,006 challans were generated for violating zebra-crossing rules. And 11,446 people were found riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets.

Cameras helpful in tracking crime

Anindita Mitra, Chief Executive Officer, Chandigarh Smart City Limited, told The Indian Express that the cameras are not just a deterrent against traffic violations but also help in detecting crime.

The ICCC team referred to a case where CCTV footage from traffic cameras helped police arrest a 28-year-old gym trainer who allegedly molested a woman at a park in sector 16 on May 19 and another woman at a park in sector 11. The case was registered on June 10.

A white Honda Activa scooter used by the man in both incidents provided the key clue. CCTV footage from sector 15 was checked and around 900 white Activas were screened. The cameras showed the accused following one of the victims to her paying guest accommodation.

The ICCC acts as the brain of the city with an on-premise data centre hosting solutions for all field systems and data analytics tools for informative decision-making, better disaster management and smarter governance.

Chandigarh Smart City Limited has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited for implementing the ICCC in the Union Territory. The project cost Rs 295 crore.
