Parliament security breach: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal demands ‘urgent investigation’ and ‘strict action’ | Delhi News

Terming the security breach in Parliament on Wednesday an “affront to our democratic values”, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanded strict and swift action against the two men who entered the Lok Sabha and opened canisters that emitted yellow-coloured smoke.

“Today’s breach in Parliament, on the solemn anniversary of the 2001 attack, is an affront to our democratic values. The security of our temple of democracy cannot be compromised,” Kejriwal said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

He also demanded an “urgent investigation” and said it was “vital to uncover who were the attackers, how they got in, what were their motives….Action must be swift and strict.”

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chaddha termed the incident an “outright attack on our democracy”. “India still remembers the attack on our Parliament in 2001. Today’s security breach is an agonizing echo of that dark day, reopening wounds on its anniversary. This is not just a breach; it’s an outright attack on our democracy. An immediate and thorough investigation is needed to swiftly unmask the perpetrators,” he said in a post on X.

Calling the Parliament a “sacred symbol of our nation”, he further said, “If this temple of our democracy isn’t secure, then what can be? We must fiercely protect our democratic institutions.”

According to reports, the two men who entered Lok Sabha were seated in the visitors’ gallery. They then took out the canisters from their shoes. Television footage showed them jumping from desk to desk, seemingly headed towards the Well of the House.

“The Parliament security or CRPF must have detained the people who were inside the Lok Sabha. For now, we know the persons managed to get general visitor passes. You have to apply for these passes beforehand and a background check is done. Inside the building, there are security checks and scanners. However, the persons managed to carry smoke sticks and then break into the Lok Sabha. At present, they are with the Parliament security services. The officials will later hand them over to us and file a complaint,” a Delhi Police official told The Indian Express.
