Pune RTA rejects pending Ola, Uber applications for aggregator licenses | Pune News
The Pune Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officially rejected pending applications of Ola and Uber for the aggregator license at the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO).
The decision came after a meeting held on March 11, chaired by District Collector Suhas Diwase in the presence of Regional Transport Officials. The RTO issued an official letter the day after the meeting, rejecting applications of ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd (the parent company of Ola) and Uber India Systems Pvt Ltd.
The letter stated that both companies were previously rejected by the RTA when they applied for the aggregator license for light vehicles due to discrepancies found in their documents. On March 11, all transport authorities reviewed the meeting and concluded that the documents of both ride-hailing companies do not comply with the required norms formulated by the central government’s Motor Vehicles Aggregators’ Guidelines, 2020.
According to the guidelines, if an aggregator is aggrieved by an order passed by a competent authority, then that aggrieved party can appeal to the state government within 30 days of receiving the order.
Around 45,000 to 50,000 cabs, including those of Ola and Uber, have been operating in the city since 2014 without any licenses. Various complaints from cab drivers about the increase in fares went unanswered due to the absence of a state policy, leading to uncertainty.
In 2023, the transport authority rejected the license of both companies to operate autos in the city, yet they continue to operate their auto services.
An RTO official confirmed that both companies operated illegally and their operations must be halted. “Further decisions will be made by senior authorities, and the companies have received 30 days to appeal to The State Transport Appellate Tribunal (SAT),” said Sanjeev Bhor, RTO official.
