Punjab AAP likely to bet on sitting ministers, MLAs in LS polls | Chandigarh News

After refusing to join hands with the Opposition Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab is planning to bet on sitting and former ministers and MLAs in the Lok Sabha elections.

AAP could give tickets to sitting ministers such as Dr Balbir Singh, Balkar Singh, Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, Kuldeep Dhaliwal and former minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar, party sources said.

The party, which conducted several surveys in all 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Punjab in search of probables in terms of their winnability before throwing its hat in the ring, has asked these leaders to contest from their home districts, they said.

Cabinet minister Laljit Singh Bhullar was considered from the Khadoor Sahib constituency, but he declined to contest the parliamentary elections, it is learnt.

Sports minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer’s candidature from the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency is almost final, party sources said. SAD (Amritsar) chief Simranjeet Singh Mann is the sitting MP from Sangrur.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was a two-time MP from Sangrur. But AAP lost the seat to the SAD in the by-elections necessitated after Mann vacated the seat after winning the Dhuri Assembly constituency and became the CM.

Health minister Dr Balbir Singh, an MLA from Patiala (rural), has also been shortlisted to contest the LS polls by the party, but his name is yet to be finalised, it is learnt.

In Bathinda, the party may field Cabinet minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian or MLA Balkar Sidhu, said sources, adding the name of Cabinet minister Kuldeep Dhaliwal is being reckoned for the Gurdaspur seat.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sunil Arora is being considered for the Ludhiana seat, while AAP’s sitting MP Sushil Kumar Rinku is likely to contest from Jalandhar, sources said.

Sitting MLA from Sham Churasi Dr Ravjot Singh is among those being considered from Hoshiarpur, it is learnt.

AAP chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang is a frontrunner from Anandpur Sahib. In Fatehgarh Sahib, the party wanted to field Mohali MLA and realtor Kulwant Singh, but he declined, it is learnt

AAP will announce its candidates as soon as the poll code is announced, party sources added.
