A social media influencer in Punjab who was set to be released from jail on Friday after getting bail was arrested on January 21 in a snatching case lodged against him last month, sparking allegations that he was facing police action because he was a critic of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

Kaka Sidhu, also known as Bhana Singh Sidhu, was in judicial custody after being arrested in an extortion case for allegedly blackmailing a woman who runs a travel agency in Ludhiana’s Model Town area and demanding Rs 10,000 from her. Just before his release on Friday, the Punjab Police took him into custody in a snatching case registered against him last year. Sidhu was remanded to police custody till January 29.

On January 20, the Patiala Sadar police had booked Sidhu under several charges, including theft, after Patiala resident Tejpreet complained to the police that on December 21, 2023, when he was returning to Patiala, some individuals in a car attacked him and snatched his gold chain. He said he recognised Sidhu among them.

Sidhu is a close aide of gangster-turned-activist Lakha Sidhana, who alleged that he was being tortured in police custody. “Bhana has been implicated in false cases for speaking against Punjab CM and his government,” said Sidhana, who unsuccessfully contested the 2022 Assembly elections from Maur.

Sidhu was recently in the news for making video calls to travel agents who allegedly cheated people by promising to send them abroad and asking them to return the money.
