Riddhima Kapoor Sahni addressed the criticism surrounding violent films
Riddhima Kapoor Sahni recently chatted with Sahitya AajTak 2024 and addressed the criticism surrounding savage films like Animal and Pushpa. In the interview, a fan shared that Raj Kapoor made films that reflected social issues. At the same time, Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal had a misogynistic tone, to which Riddhima got candid about her opinion on the making of such films and said that if her grandfather, Raj Kapoor, were alive today, Indian cinema would be very different from what we know. She said:
“If my grandfather was here today, I am sure you’d have seen some remarkable movies by him. But the audience is watching such movies today.”
Javed Akhtar also criticised people for promoting such violent films
Javed Akhtar also made a similar comment in a chat with Bharka Dutt. Javed Akhtar has been promoting clean language in the entertainment industry. Not long ago, Javed also shared his criticised Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal. However, later, he clarified that his criticism was not directed towards the movie but towards the people who liked the film. He shared that 15 people making a film with wrong values or with obscene songs in a population of 140 crores is not the issue. The problem arises when people make such films a box-office success. He shared:
“I didn’t express my opinion on Animal, I spoke about the audience that watched it. If 15 people have made a film with the wrong values, if 10-12 people make obscene songs, that’s not the problem. If 15 people are perverts among the 140 crore population, it doesn’t matter. When that thing goes on the market and becomes a superhit, that’s the problem.”
Javed Akhtar commented on vulgarity being the new standard of the film industry
Javed Akhtar is a well-known screenwriter, lyricist, and poet who rose to prominence with his works in the duo Salim-Javed. The writer has written some of the most loved films in Indian cinema, including Sholay, Deewar and Zanjeer. In a recent interview, he mentioned how vulgarity has become a norm in the cinema. Talking about the subject, he shared that vulgarity, however, now more common, was not a newfound concept; it had existed in the 20s and 30s but was not accepted by the middle class until recently.
“There were vulgar songs in the 1920s-1930s as well, but they did not find general acceptance in households. Vulgarity wasn’t invented in the last ten years; it has existed since forever. However, there wasn’t an acceptance in the middle class for such vulgarity, which exists now.”
