India’s potential victory in football was thwarted by a controversy on the field. On Tuesday, during India’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier match against Qatar at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, a contentious goal by Qatar’s Yousef Aymen caught Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the Indian team captain, and the rest of the players off guard.
Here’s what happened: After Sandhu saved a header, the ball had clearly gone out of play. However, in the match without Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the whistle did not blow. While the Indian players thought the ball was out of play and stopped playing, the ball was brought back in by Al Hassan and put inside the Indian net by Aymen.

What should have been a routine corner kick turned into a game-changing moment, leaving Indian players bewildered and frustrated. Despite their protests, the referees remained unable to provide satisfactory explanations, leaving lingering questions about the integrity of the match.
Numerous videos, photos, and screenshots are circulating on social media, shared by football fans worldwide. They expressed frustration over the perceived bias and unfairness in the match, despite clear evidence of the error.
Ace footballer Kylian Mbappe shared photos on his official X account, stating, “THAT BALL WAS CLEARLY OUT OF PLAY LINE… SUCH CORRUPTION IN QATAR VS INDIA WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION FOOTBALL MATCH.”

Digital creator Pushpek Sidhu who usually posts satirical and funny reels on Indian stereotyping done by other countries also shared a video expressing his dismay.
On his video, one user commented, “Shame on fifa and qatar + refree.” Another user said, “FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT !!!!!” A third user wrote, “Correction: We were robbed of a chance to play in Round 3 of the qualifiers, after which we would have an opportunity to play in the 2026 WC. Also, it’s incredibly funny that Qatar had to use money to beat us even though we are ranked 121st in the FIFA rankings and they are somewhere in the top 30s lol.”
X user @AwaraHoon also shared the same set of photos and wrote, “This is blatant cheating and freaking disgrace!!! WTF. Shame on Qatar and the referee.”

To this, a user said, “How this goal can stand? Fifa and refferee went mad or what.” A second user wrote, “What a robbery man, well paid Qatar.” And a third user commented, “Blood boiling stuff! I am 100% sure there’s corruption involved.”
The goal from Qatar, which shouldn’t have counted, messed up India’s solid defensive play in the second half. It canceled out Lallianzuala Chhangte’s goal in the first half. Qatar scored again twelve minutes later, putting them ahead and knocking India out of the World Cup qualifiers in the second round.
