Marvel Studios made a groundbreaking announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, revealing the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, the beloved actor will not be reprising his iconic role as Iron Man. Instead, he will embody the formidable villain, Doctor Doom.

A New Chapter for Downey Jr.
Downey Jr., synonymous with the Iron Man character, surprised fans by appearing in a Doctor Doom mask and cloak. The actor’s transition from hero to villain marks a new chapter in his MCU journey. The Russo Brothers, who previously directed several successful Marvel films, will helm the upcoming Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars.

The Comic-Con panel also shed light on other exciting projects. Captain America: Brave New World will feature Giancarlo Esposito as the villain, Seth Voelker, and Harrison Ford’s transformation into the Red Hulk. The Thunderbolts cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour, made a surprise appearance, offering glimpses into their characters.
The highly anticipated Fantastic Four film, titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps, will begin filming in London and is slated for a July 2025 release.
