Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli in line to play ODIs in Sri Lanka, Suryakumar Yadav to captain India in T20Is | Cricket News

ROHIT Sharma and Virat Kohli have informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they will be available for three ODI series against Sri Lanka to be played next month, it is learnt. The BCCI senior selection committee is expected to meet on Thursday evening via zoom call as board secretary Jay Shah has flown to Sri Lanka for the International Cricket Council annual conference.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee in consultation with the BCCI has finally decided that Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Indian T20I team for three match series whereas Rohit will continue to lead the Indian side in the ODIs. The Indian Express had earlier reported how Suryakumar was in line to captain the side in the T20Is as the selectors weren’t sure if they should appoint Pandya as a skipper given his past fitness record. Pandya was India’s vice-captain at their triumphant T20 World Cup campaign.

It is understood the selection committee has informed BCCI that they are open to replace Suryakumar as a captain in future, if his performance isn’t satisfactory and doesn’t meet the expectations. The BCCI is eyeing Suryakumar to lead the Indian team at the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup which will be played in India and Sri Lanka.

Although Pandya seemed a front-runner to captain, it is understood that BCCI bosses and selectors spoke to Pandya to explain their plans for the next two years and why they preferred Suryakumar.

Seniors for ODIs

Meanwhile, the senior players in the team have agreed to the request of newly appointed coach Gautam Gambhir to take part in the three-match ODIs as it will be his first series as a coach.

Festive offer

Pandya, though will be playing only the T20Is and won’t be part of the ODI squad. The senior selection committee has decided not to pick their ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and he will be given rest for the short series. Rishabh Pant will feature in both the Indian squads.

Riyan Parag darkhorse

The Indian Express understands that Rajasthan Royals middle-order batsman Riyan Parag has pushed his case for the Indian middle-order spot and is likely to get picked for the ODI and T20I side as well. The selection committee is trying new faces for the future and Parag, who could also bowl, is likely to get a berth in both the sides. Parag inclusion means Suryakumar won’t be part of the ODI squad and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal too will feature only in the T20I squad.

Shreyas Iyer, who last featured in the ICC World Cup 50 overs team will be finding his way back in the Indian ODI side. The BCCI had come hard on Iyer earlier this year and his name was excluded from the annual contract. However, with his return to international cricket, he will soon find a place in BCCI’s annual contract. Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dubey is likely to feature in both the squads especially with Pandya opting out of ODIs.
