Sandeep Reddy Vanga shut down Ram Gopal Varma’s theories about Animal and Godfather: ‘Haven’t read a single book in my life’ | Bollywood News
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who has been a vocal supporter of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s controversial blockbuster Animal, said that he views the movie as a riff on The Godfather, but from Sunny Corleone’s perspective. In an interview, he also compared the movie to the films of Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, and said that he spoke to Vanga about a certain theory that he had about the movie, but Vanga shut him down in his own trademark fashion.
In an interview with News9 Live, RGV said that Animal reminded him of Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. “The last film I saw where the director himself is not being judgemental about the character was Wolf of Wall Street. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character is immoral, he’s bad, and yet you’re fascinated to see him. I would like to think Animal is a mix of Scorsese and Tarantino.”

RGV said that he has a ‘problem’ with writer Swanand Kirkire’s recent criticism of Animal, where he said that the film could set a ‘dangerous’ precedent. Elaborating on his Godfather theory, RGV said, “I remember a line from the book, where Puzo describes Luca Brasi: ‘From 1935 to 1937, the name of Santino Corleone sent shockwaves through the underworld. Yet for sheer terror even he was eclipsed by the awesome man named Luca Brasi’. That kind of description was never there in Francis Ford Coppola’s film, but the Don was always scared of his son. And the way Sonny wants to kill all the five families when Don Corleone is attacked reminds me of Ranvijay in Animal.”
RGV said that he asked Vanga about this, “I asked Sandeep if he’s read the book Godfather, and he said, ‘I’ve never read a single book in my life’.” RGV has called Animal the ‘most original’ film in Indian cinema history, and has described Vanga as ‘the highly commercial version of Anurag Kashyap’. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna and Triptii Dimri, Animal has grossed more than Rs 750 crore worldwide in 12 days of release.
