A partial number plate of a two-wheeler obtained after examination of over 100 CCTV camera footages helped Pune police crack the case of sexual abuse of an eight-year-old girl and arrest a serial sexual offender, who was released from prison in May last year after completing his sentence in a case of kidnapping and rape from 2013.
The Pune police were investigating a case, in which an eight-year-old girl was molested and sexually abused by an unidentified person in December last year. A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
At the beginning of the probe, police had no clues about the identity of the suspect. Four separate teams from the detection branch of the police station, where the case was registered, started working on the case.
After examining over 100 footages from CCTV cameras installed in the area surrounding the place where the crime took place and also various approach routes to that spot, the police got a partial number plate.
“In one of the footages, we spotted the partial registration number plate. We could only see the last four digits but not the series. We took out a list of 16 vehicles matching the partial plate. Cross-referencing the 16 persons with some of the details on the appearance of the suspect, we zeroed in on the suspect. We detained him for questioning from Narhe area of Pune,” said an officer from the police station.
After confirming his role in the crime, he was placed under arrest on Monday. The police also seized the bike he used to commit the crime.
“Probe revealed the suspect is a serial offender and between 2007 and 2013, he was booked for cases of sexual offences against women. Nanaware was booked in two cases of kidnapping and molestation registered at Swargate police station in 2007 and three more under same charges registered at Sahakarnagar, Bharati Vidyapeeth and Bibwewadi police stations between 2011 and 2013,” said the officer.
“In 2013 again, he was booked in a case of kidnapping and rape and sentenced to imprisonment. He was released from prison in May last year,” said another officer from the police station.
