UK Transport Minister Resigns, Adding Pressure on PM Keir Starmer

UK Transport Minister Louise Haigh resigned after admitting to misleading police over a work phone, dealing another setback to PM Keir Starmer.

Louise Haigh resigned as UK Transport Minister, the first resignation from Starmer’s top team since the July election victory.

The resignation followed media reports about her 2014 conviction for misleading police over a lost work phone.

Haigh admitted to falsely claiming her phone was stolen during a mugging in 2013, later realizing it was still at home.

In her resignation letter, Haigh stated the issue would distract from the government’s work and that she would support Starmer from outside the government.

Despite her resignation, Keir Starmer thanked Louise Haigh for her contributions to the government’s transport agenda.

The Conservative Party supported Haigh’s resignation but questioned why Starmer appointed her despite knowing about her fraud conviction.

Haigh’s resignation adds to the challenges facing Starmer, whose party’s approval ratings have dropped since July.

The Labour government has faced criticism for policies on fuel payments, inheritance tax changes, and its first budget, which raised taxes on businesses and the wealthy.

Haigh, elected in 2015, defended her actions, calling the phone incident a “genuine mistake” with no personal gain.
