West Bengal government has offered 100 per cent waiver on penalty on tax of any kind accrued by any vehicle under a waiver scheme. A notification in this regard was issued by the transport department on Thursday.
“A 100 per cent waiver of penalty accrued on taxes due up to December 31, 2023, if availed within the period from January 1 to Feb 29, 2024,” read the notification.
The government has announced 100 per cent waiver of additional fees for not obtaining Certificate of Fitness (CF) in due time and 80 per cent of waiver of penalty on delayed renewed issuance of permit.
According to the transport department, around 12.5 lakh vehicles have pending tax or haven’t done certificate of fitness in due time. Out of this 12.5 lakhs, people maximum are goods vehicles close to 35 per cent.
The government has opened a two-month window for waiver of penalty. “We will also offer a waiver of additional fees for not obtaining CF in due time and a waiver of penalty on delayed renewal/issuance of permit 100 per cent, if paid between January 1 to January 30, 2024, and 80 per cent if paid between January 31, 2024, and February 29, 2024,” state Transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty said.
According to sources, the dues amount to Rs 4,700 crore. The department is offering a waive of around Rs 2,476 crore. The department has appealed to all vehicle owners to avail of this scheme and clear their dues.
People can avail themselves of this service from counters at the district level as well as online facilities for paying of taxes, issuance of CF or renewal of permit.
