The Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) on Thursday announced that the job aspirants who cleared the written recruitment test in September for the posts of electrical assistant will not have to reappear for the January 7 exam. Pole-climbing tests, however, which are also a part of the recruitment process, were conducted again on Thursday after an agreement with the candidates.
The move comes nearly a week after over 1,200 aspirants, led by youth leader Yuvrajsinh Jadeja, held a protest at the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) office, giving an ultimatum to the state government to withdraw its decision on re-examination, citing “technical faults” in the pole tests conducted in March. The aspirants sat on a 48-hour protest outside the GUVNL office in Vadodara, demanding that the results of the exams conducted earlier this year be upheld.

The aspirants said they were willing to undergo pole tests, which had been “scrapped due to technical faults” in some locations.
Meanwhile, the GETCO conducted the pole climbing retests at various locations, including Vadodara, on Thursday for the 1,200 candidates.
Late on Wednesday evening, the government withdrew its decision to make the written re-examination mandatory. In a statement, GETCO said, “Earlier, pole tests were conducted for aspiring electrical assistants between March 6 and 13 this year and a written test by the Gujarat University on September 9. However, due to a technical fault in the pole test conducted earlier, the results of the test were suspended and it was decided that a fresh test is to be conducted on December 28 and 29. A fresh written test will also be held on January 7….”
It added, “Considering the interest of the aspirants, it has been decided that while all aspirants will have to undergo the fresh pole tests on December 28 and 29, those candidates, who have appeared for the written test (on September 9) will not need to appear for another written test on January 7. However, those candidates who could not clear the pole tests earlier and are able to clear the pole tests being held again will also have to appear for the written examination on January 7.”
On Tuesday, GETCO suspended Executive Engineers SR Yadav of Palanpur Circle and BJ Chaudhary Mehsana Circle who supervised the March pole tests conducted in Jamnagar and Junagadh, respectively.
The suspension orders state that while Chaudhary conducted the pole test “in two different manners, which was not as per prescribed guidelines of the circular dated January 1, 2023”, Yadav allegedly “considered (the pole test) to be complete on the touching angle at 6.5 metres, which reveals that the process conducted was beyond the laid down guideline”
. Both engineers have been suspended for “gross negligence of normal performance of duty as per directive”.
The suspension orders also state that the issue surfaced in the media and brought “negative publicity” for GETCO.
“The issue of not following the modalities for pole test has surfaced in a lot of print media and has given a lot of negative publicity for GETCO. The issue has become very serious and this could have been avoided by you with proper vigilance and monitoring. The gross negligence and inadequate supervision in the performance of your duty has brought huge embarrassment and disrepute to GETCO and the government as a whole,” read the statement.
