YouTube, the video-sharing platform used by billions every day, is one of the main reasons behind the rapid growth of the ‘creator economy’. In a blog post, the company revealed it handed out “over $70 billion to creators, media companies and artists in the last three years”, making it the largest creator monetisation platform.

YouTube CEO Neil Mohan said that the platform now has more than 3 million channels that are part of the YouTube Partner Program and shared a roadmap highlighting strategies the company plans to focus on in 2024.

AI to boost creativity

YouTube says it will make AI available to creators to boost their creativity now that Shorts garners over 70 billion views every day. The platform has already announced new experiments like Dream Track and Dream Screen, which allows creators to generative backgrounds for YouTube Shorts just by typing an idea.

Creators as next-gen studios

To boost creator payouts, YouTube has been constantly rolling out new ways to increase income by introducing features like brand partnerships. In 2023 alone, the company revealed the number of creators who started using channel memberships increased by more than 50 per cent.

YouTube also claims that it supports creators via programs like Creator Collective, which aims to bring together creators to share experiences, collaborate and build community. As for 2024, the platform aims to work with policymakers and partners across the industry to recognise the value creators bring.

With the number of people consuming YouTube content on a large screen increasing by over 400 per cent, YouTube says viewers watch more than 1 billion hours of average YouTube content on their TVs every day. To replace traditional cable TV, the platform is bringing sports, podcasts and much more to YouTube TV.
