Netflix Introduces Additional Fees for Sharing Passwords: Here’s the Cost
Netflix has recently implemented a new policy that affects users in the United States, the United Kingdom, and select countries. The streaming giant now requires an additional fee for those who want to share their account with friends and family members outside their household. While specific strategies may vary by market, it is important to note that Netflix is taking steps to address password-sharing.
For users in the United States, adding another member to their Netflix account will now cost an extra $7.99 per month. However, this pricing structure is applicable only to certain subscription plans. The Basic and Standard plans, priced at $9.99 and $6.99 per month respectively, do not offer the option to add additional members. On the other hand, the Netflix Standard plan, available at $15.49 per month, allows users to add one extra member for an additional $7.99 per month. Meanwhile, subscribers to Netflix’s premium package, which offers 4K playback, can add two extra members for the same $7.99 monthly fee.
In the UK, Netflix users who wish to share their account with others will need to pay an additional £4.99 per month.
To keep track of who has access to their account, Netflix advises users to regularly check the “manage access and devices” section in the Settings menu. This feature allows users to monitor all the devices connected to their Netflix account.
While this change in policy may appear to be an inconvenience for some users, Netflix’s intention is to reinforce the notion that each account should be utilized within a single household. In a blog post addressing the matter, Netflix states, “A Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are — at home, on the go, on holiday — and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.”
In the company’s recent quarterly results, Netflix acknowledged the potential setbacks it may face as it cracks down on password sharing. However, the company remains optimistic about its long-term growth prospects.
As Netflix continues to adapt its policies to ensure fair usage and sustained growth, it is essential for users to stay informed about the specific guidelines and requirements in their respective regions.
